A RARE PAINTED LACQUER BARBED RIM FOOD BOX, FITTED TRAYS AND COVER
LATE MING/EARLY QING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY

Formed of seven bracket-lobed sides, the upper surface of the box designed with a floral medallion panel, finely decorated in the tianqi technique to depict a dense cell-pattern diaper enclosing flower-heads and wan symbols within a key-fret band, repeated on the sides of both box and cover within shaped cartouches, all against a leiwen-ground, the interior fitted with a brown lacquer tray accommodating a further arrangement of seven petal-shaped smaller trays radiating from a central circular medallion (some repairs)

Lot Essay

Large lacquer boxes with their original interior tray and sweetmeat compartments are rare. Compare a related large lobed lacquer box further embellished with gilt in the Palace Museum, Beijing, dated to the mid-Qing period, see Qiqi, vol. 6, Qing, no. 138.
