Lot Essay

Large lacquer boxes with their original interior tray and sweetmeat compartments are rare. Compare a related large lobed lacquer box further embellished with gilt in the Palace Museum, Beijing, dated to the mid-Qing period, see Qiqi, vol. 6, Qing, no. 138. Also, cf. lacquer boxes with similar compartments, illustrated op. cit., nos. 20, 21, and 23.
