Lot Essay

Another fine bowl from this very rare series, equally well enamelled and with the same composition, but with the boys at different activities, sold in these Rooms, 1 May 1995, lot 680.

The imagery of boys expresses the wish for the owner of the bowl to have numerous offspring, while the image of the boys playing with lanterns and lighting firecrackers may suggest that the scene here is of the Lantern Festival held on the 15th day of the lunar new year.
