The flat top of the cover finely carved with a portly figure of an immortal carrying a bundle on a stick slung over his left shoulder, standing in the shade of a pine tree, all against a cell-pattern diaper ground, the sides of the box and cover with composite floral scrolls, the base and interior covered in black lacquer

Lot Essay

Two circular boxes with very similar subject-matter, depicting a portly immortal in a landscape, are illustrated in Karamono, Imported Lacquerwork - Chinese, Korean and Ryukyuan, Tokugawa Art Museum, No. 2, nos. 102 and 118.
