Baselitz's woodcuts from the mid 1960's reference Goltzius' chiaroscuro woodcuts and other Italian Mannerist masters. The monumental feel of the figure, the use of body distortion and expressive emotion makes specific links to the past. Yet, he now places these figures in scorched landscapes representing the ravages of Post-War Germany. The tactile surfaces of these prints are much different from the perfected offset processes that had become popular in the age of mass-production during this decade.
