PHILIP GUSTON (1913-1980)
Christie's is pleased to offer the following 15 signed lithographs by Philip Guston. Shortly before his death in 1980, Guston collaborated with Gemini G.E.L. to produce 25 lithographs. So that the artist could avoid travelling to Los Angeles and the restrictions of working within a specific time table, Gemini sent all the necessary materials to Guston's studio in Woodstock, New York. In this natural environment, the artist was able to fully explore themes most personal to him -- good versus evil, brutality, and ironically, his tormented perception of himself as a powerless and ineffective artist. These lithographs have the same narrative strength and sense of vitality and emotion as his painterly canvases of the same period. They are not only a testimony to Guston's devotion to drawing but also to what concerned him in the world.
