Lot Essay

Painting in a time when the 'People's Artists' (notably represented by Affandi, Sudjojono and Hendra) were propounding a movement against the Mooie Indie (Beautiful Indies) school of paintings that idealised and romanticised the Dutch East Indies to mere 'beautiful women in dancing postures and elaborate headdresses and majestic landscapes', Dullah was steadfast to his artistic inspirations.

Painted numerous portraits of the people of Indonesia which include the old and young, the beautiful and the ordinary, Dullah is very much inspired by the 'beauty' of the landscape as seen by the Dutch masters which are perceived as exotically distorted impressions by the 'People's artists'. The present lot is of an uncommonly large size that allows the presentation of a grand procession in Bali. The earthy tone of the work which mingles a mixture of greenish and yellowish tones conveys an atmospheric mood of nostalgic longing and sobriety, befitting the occasion.
