Lot Essay

Raza's works have changed dramatically over the course of the last two decades. This shift in his creative process has manifested itself onto his canvas. The change in Raza's creative philosophy has manifested itself in very specific ways on his canvas. The strong element of spontaneity seen in the earlier works is now replaced with a carefully conceived image, where "thinking precedes the act of painting." (G. Sen, Bindu: Space and Time in Raza's Vision, New Delhi, 1997, p. 11.)

The concept of ankuran or germination is one that constantly re-appears in Raza's work. The initial inspiration for these works came from the miracle of witnessing the birth of a new sapling. For Raza, this simple act embodied the process of the creation and emergence of new life on Earth. "It is the resurgent spirit of rebirth, of the fertilizing powers of the sun and the earth which converge to give birth to new life." (op. cit., p.19)

The bindu remains an integral part of these works, as it represents both the "seed" and the "embryo", thereby "...establishing the vital link between man and nature." (ibid.)
