Of typical form with spreading cylindrical base, flaring shoulder with vertical rim, the centre rising to sectioned faceted neck terminating in an octagonal faceted tulip mouth, the body elegantly pierced and engraved with interlaced arabesques and cloudband motifs, a band of reciprocal pierced trefoil terminals above and below, the mouth engraved with panels of arabesques on a cross-hatched ground, slight damages to foot and shoulder, later base plate

Lot Essay

This is a most unusual early Ottoman candlestick which combines an Ottoman form with a style of decoration found in fifteenth century candlesticks which have generally been attributed to Iran. See for example one in the David Collection, Copenhagen (Folsach, K.v.: Islamic Art in the David Collection, Copenhagen, 2001, no.524, p.326) or three sold in these Rooms, 19 October 1993, lot 385, 18 October 1994, lot 403 and 29 April 2003, lot.84. Both the idea of a pierced base and the upper sections with engraving on a cross-hatched ground can be linked back to these earlier examples. The design details of the pierced band on this example however is completely from the Ottoman repertoire of the first half of the sixteenth century.
