Lot Essay

A single tile of the same design is in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, inv. no.M.2000.31, illustrated on the website. The imitation stone border design is one which is particularly associated with the period of Murad III, appearing on the columns of the tiled arcade in his room in the Topkapi Saray Palace (Öz, Tahsin: Turkish Ceramics, Istanbul, n.d, pl.LI).
