Lot Essay

Charles was the youngest son of the caricaturist John Doyle. He entered the Edinburgh Office of Works where he continued to work throughout his life. He frequently exhibited at the R.S.A. and produced illustrations for humourous books. He was also father of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

This present watercolour is similar in its political subject matter and format to another sold at Sotheby's London, 30 October 1997, lot 45 'The Argument'.
