Lot Essay

This painting is provisionally numbered as 0608 in Dr S.B. Kennedy's forthcoming catalogue raisonnée.

Dated 1935-40 on stylistic grounds. The simple rigour of the composition, with closely modulated 'Whistleresque' tones in the background and middle distance, contrasting with the warm ochres and browns of the foreground with its narrative of human habitation, shows Henry at his best.
