Lot Essay

Born in the Baltic Port of Memel, East Prussia (now Klaipeda, Lithuania), Arthur Waagen (d.1898) pursued his career as a sculptor in Paris, where he was inspired by the fashion for the oriental. Renowned for his fine and realistic modelling, Waagen produced a series of groups and figures with a North African flavour.
