Lot Essay

Joseph Cornell often developed obsessive infatuations with starlets, dancers and celebrities. In the 1920s he saw the actress Jeanne Eagels perform and fell under her spell. Although she died in 1929, he would go on to make make numerous works with her in mind. In and around 1965 he created approximately a dozen works dedicated to the performer of which the present example is one.
