With nickel-finished fully jewelled lever movement, Guillaume balance, screwed gold chatons, wolf's tooth winding, silver cuvette, the white enamel dial with Roman numerals, centred and surrounded by multi-coloured designs simulating Celtic symbols, blued steel spear-shaped hands, in heavy case with chased and engraved scene in high relief depicting Vercingetorix in arms surrounded by oak leaves and acorn, the reverse similary decorated and depicting his armour and various arms, the corrugated band with engraved leaf decoration, leaf-shaped bow, gilt crown, case, cuvette and movement signed and numbered

Lot Essay

Accompanied by Paul D. Nardin Certificate No. 3816 bearing the stamp "GRAND PRIX PARIS 1889", République & Canton de Neuchâtel Bulletin de Marche dated 1889 and original fitted wooden presentation box containing a spare white enamel dial with Roman numerals and subsidiary seconds, a silver bezel and crystal, three further spare crystals and blued steel pear hands. The original invoice from Teófilo Dartigues, Relojeria de la Plaza Victoria, dated Buenos Aires, 11 November 1891, confirms the sale of the present watch to Mr. Godoy for the amount of $ 1290.

The watch is furthermore delivered with a typed note in Spanish explaining that the decoration of the case, representing Vercingetorix, was made by a French artist "whose name is known to Mr. Teófilo Dartigues". It also states the Paris Exhibition in 1889 and the original buyer, the renowned Paraguayan publicist and diplomat Juan-Silvano Godoy, who to a later date gave the watch to Mr. Carlos Abreu Sosa.

Vercingetorix (72-46 BC), chieftain of the Arverni (a Celtic tribe that inhabited the present-day region of Lyon, France), led the great Gallic revolt against the Romans in 53-52BC and was made prisoner by Julius Cesar.
