HAUT BRION
Georges Delmas, born into a family of wine growers in 1894, began his long career in 1912 at Château Cos d'Estournel. He returned from the First World War to assist the maître de chai at Haut Brion and was appointed régisseur in 1923, and then director until 1961. Two subsequent generations have continued the family's proud involvement in Château Haut Brion.
1924 ***
An abundant crop of attractive wines despite the poor spring and wet summer. Saved by a flawless September. "Divinely decadent; advancing age but opulent charms".
MB Vintage Wine
Château Haut-Brion--Vintage 1924
Pessac (Graves), 1er cru classé
All lots lightly bin soiled labels
Lot 2056 levels: five bottom neck and one very top shoulder. Lot 2057 levels: very top shoulder; one with stained label. Lot 2058 levels: one bottom neck or better, two very top and three top shoulder. Lot 2059 levels: two very top, two top and two upper shoulder, one stained label
Tasting note from a representative bottle from this cellar: Garnet-brown of medium depth, with ripe, cherry nose allied to roasted fruits. Delicately built but still very much alive. This is rich and fragrant, with a dry but not harsh finish - a real beauty. AH
The mid-1920, was a particularly successful period for Haut-Brion, and I well recall the brilliant 1926 from the Dillon family cellar, also I believe, in New Jersey. The bottle at the tasting had an excellent top shoulder level, a fairly deep colour, sweet and fragrant bouquet and delicious flavour, allowing for the exigencies of old age; like a bright eyed and still fascinating old lady.
