R. BOYER, NEGOCIANT A BEAUNE

Many of the Red Burgundies in this cellar bear the labels of R. Boyer - Anthony Hanson explains the unique history of this little known négociant and uncovers a fascinating relationship:

This firm belonged to Roland Boyer, who was a connoisseur and wine shipper well-known in French wine circles in the 1930s. He was a pioneer promoter of Domaine-bottled wines from Burgundy, at the same time as Frank Schoonmaker was opening up direct shipments to the USA, from Burgundy's greatest estates. Raymond Boyer was a client and respected name at leading Domaines such as Tollot-Beaut (Chorey-lès-Beaune), Robert Ampeau (Meursault), Jean Boillot (Volnay) and Charles Noëllat (Vosne-Romanée).

Raymond Boyer's main activity, however, was selecting great cuvées of Burgundy for bottling under his own label, of which we have outstanding examples here. His wine business was based in Paris, in the rue Lincoln, near the Rue de Rivoli in Paris, and called the Caves des Tuileries. For his selections, he went to arguably Burgundy's greatest négoçiant-éleveur at that time, Maison Joseph Drouhin in Beaune. Robert Drouhin, now President of Joseph Drouhin, well recalls meeting Roland Boyer, who was a passionate, knowledgeable Burgundy lover, in his childhood years. Robert's father Maurice Drouhin would visit Boyer regularly in Paris, and provided premises for him, in the Joseph Drouhin cellars at 7, rue d'Enfer, Beaune. These cellars had previously been those of the Dukes of Burgundy and the Kings of France, and they are still, today, the firm's headquarters. In these historic vaults Raymond Boyer would select the finest Joseph Drouhin cuvées, for bottling under his own label and dispatch to the United States.
