ROMANEE-CONTI 1934

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is justly lauded as the pre-eminent, greatest red wine estate in the whole of Burgundy. It owns exclusively the Grand Cru vineyards of Romanée Conti and La Tâche. It was a pioneer of Domaine bottling and has been a standard-bearer of authenticity, complexity and quality for the whole region throughout the twentieth century.

Until the 1945 vintage, the estate succeeded in maintaining the plantations of un-grafted, pre-phylloxera vines through the Romanée Conti vineyard. In the years before World War Two, yields were derisory, but in great years like 1934, legendary wines were produced. AH.

The Romanée Conti 1934 is a mythical wine that few have had the pleasure to taste, to find such a great wine in an American collection is quite rare, especially since it has never moved since original purchase; but in such quantity typifies the superlative nature of this collection. RB.

Tasting note from a representative bottle from this cellar:
Amber-red, with orange rim, the nose being fragrant, fresh and spicy. To taste this wine is to be totally beguiled. Every element has merged, to form a fleshy, succulent, silky whole whose beauty and sweetness - yet with a dry finish - are captivating. Of course : Romanée-Conti is reputed the greatest red Burgundy, and is, for many, the world's most astonishing and perfect wine. I need look no further here is why. AH

Unquestionably the best vintage of the decade of the 1930s. Excellent level. Relatively pale, a sort fo hazelnut tawny. But the bouquet and palete once again proved that it is best not to judge burgundy, particulay mature burgundy, by its colour. Bouquet rich fragrant, complex, which developed and held well in the glass. Incredibly sweet on the palate, concentrated, hint of caramel, great length. Also superb. MB
