A SWISS ENAMELLED VARI-COLOUR GOLD SNUFF-BOX SET WITH HARDSTONES AND AN ENAMEL MINIATURE
Geneva, circa 1780, with prestige marks, later struck with two Parisian post-1838 restricted warranty marks for gold and another indistinct mark
Oval box, the scalework guilloché panels on cover, sides and base coated with translucent green enamel, the lid centred by an oval enamel plaque painted en grisaille with a young lady in classical attire crowning a herm of Venus with playful putti and a pair of doves below, within a beaded gold border flanked by two brown moss agate tondi in fluted borders, the four-colour gold mounts decorated with a wavescroll band interspersed by flowers and foliage, the sides and base centred by oval matted gold reserves chased with trophies of love, music, and harvest alternating with circular brown moss-agate panels framed by flutes, bright-cut gold rims
