Lot Essay

Spiegel became a master in St Petersburg about 1830, and among his apprentices is Gustav Fabergé. A. von Solodkoff (Russian Gold and Silverwork 17th to 19th Century, Fribourg/New York, 1981, p. 219) notes that Spiegel 'made gold boxes with chasing as well as with semi-precious stone mosaics'.
