A FRENCH GOLD-HINGED COMPOSITION SNUFF-BOX SET WITH MINIATURES
by Jean-Baptiste Betmon (fl. 1820-1826), marked, with the excise and second standard marks for gold, Paris 1819-1838, and with the Parisian unoffical post-Revolutionary third standard mark for 18-carat gold, the miniatures by a member of the Van Blarenberghe family, probably Louis-Nicolas (1716-1794)
Rectangular black composition box, the gold-hinged cover and the base centred by glazed oval miniatures depicting washers at a lake and birdcatchers in a rural landscape, within fluted gold mounts, the four sides inset with similar rectangular miniatures, the lid and four sides encrusted with trailing foliage and anthemia, slightly raised applied gold thumbpiece
