Lot Essay

Doris Duke instructed Verdura to unset the olivines on the original case, add a new gold case and a special jeweled outer case. The original case cost $1,250, the cost of the work was $2,950 totalling $4,495 including tax.

This case is a typical objet d' art Verdura enjoyed creating. He designed more than twenty cigarette cases for his longtime friends Cole and Linda Porter. Linda commissioned the cases for Cole to celebrate the openings of his shows. The cases, both luxurious and practical, were jeweled works of art.
