A SET OF THREE ITALIAN ROCOCO BLUE-PAINTED AND MECCA [GILT-VARNISHED SILVERED] SIDE CHAIRS
VENICE, CIRCA 1740
Each with a scrolling central crest yoke-shaped top rail and the vasiform solid splat now with an upholstered back and seat covered in striped blue silk on cabriole legs joined by a turned stretcher and ending in squared feet, decorated throughout in blue with chinoiserie and arabasque strapwork on a trellis ground, decorated to the reverse, the backs possibly originally without upholstery, blue decoration probably original with some refreshments, one with later rear stretcher (3)

Lot Essay

A set of five armchairs that are almost certainly from the same set are at Biltmore, North Carolina, in the Second Floor Living Hall of the 250-room mansion. The Biltmore chairs were almost certainly purchased by George Vanderbilt during his travels in Europe in the six years before completion of the building in 1895.
