Lot Essay

The introduction of bianco-sopra-bianco into China is a mystery, although it had been used in Italy in the 16th century and then in France, Sweden and England in the 18th century. See Howard and Ayers, China for the West, London and New York, 1978, vol.I, no.132 for a very similar plate from the Mottahedeh Collection; the authors suggest that the Chinese may have been responsible for re-introducing the technique into Europe after about 1730.
