No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VA… Read more The mid-1960's were the years of 'Lyrical Abstraction' in Rustin's work, the most joyful and optimistic period of his activity. The design of his work is often based on a loosely drawn grid. In some of these paintings, it seems as if we are looking at a fragment or detail of some larger design, stretching beyond the confines of the surface we actually see. Rustin states that the aim of these works was always to be abstract. But there is an intrusion of the figurative. The sun symbol recurs quite frequently, as do crosses, primitive house shapes and rudimentary figures of animals.
