Lot Essay

The Jane accompanied James Weddell on three Antarctic voyages when she had a crew of 22 men. It was on his third voyage, from 1822 to 1824, that Weddell achieved the remarkable feat of going further south than anyone before and she eventually returned to England in July 1824.
