The wooden barquentine Sparkling Foam was built in Pain's Yard at Sandwich for Hoult & Co. of Whitstable in 1868. Registered in Ramsgate at 199 tons gross (175 net), she measured 116 feet in length with a 24½ foot beam and, by 1873, was trading out of Liverpool to South America amongst many different destinations. After a long and successful if uneventful life, she was sunk by a German submarine in the English Channel on 15th March 1918 whilst travelling from Caen to Swansea in ballast.
