Lot Essay

The four-masted barque Pegasus was one of a splendid pair of sisters built for D. Corsar & Sons of Liverpool by W.H. Potter, also on the Mersey, in 1884. Registered at 2,631 tons gross (2,438 net), she measured 314 feet in length with a 42½ foot beam and proved a hugely successful carrier rather than a record-breaker. After long and faithful service under Corsar colours, Pegasus was sold to Norwegian owners around 1909 and wrecked in a storm in the Gulf of Bothnia three years later, on 27th August 1912, whilst en route to Melbourne with a cargo of timber.
