Lot Essay

The Russian armoured cruiser portrayed in the first of these two works is almost certainly the huge 13,675 ton Rossia completed in 1897. The French vessel in the other is one of a pair of sisters, Magenta or Solfirino, the only two-decker broadside ironclads built for the French Navy in the early 1860s.
