THE STARK MUNRO LETTERS

Sir Arthur CONAN DOYLE. Fragment of the autograph manuscript of his autobiographical novel, The Stark Munro Letters, [1894], 4 pages, folio (126 lines), left-hand margin torn (not affecting text), small tears in folds along lower borders, rust from paper clip on each leaf; also: autograph notes for the novel including details concerning Professor Henry Munro, Ella Munro, her father, Admiral Vernon Hale, and Mortimer Simcox, 6 pages, 8vo, original staple.

The Stark Munro Letters was begun in Switzerland in January 1894 and accepted by Jerome K. Jerome for The Idler, where it was serialised between October 1894 - November 1895. It was published on 5 September 1895.

Years later he wrote of this book, 'It is the evolution of a young medico, based largely, on the subjective side, on my own experience and feelings. In it I treat religion and science, and then I give the reasons which brought me to a broad Theism'. In Quest of Truth, being a Correspondence between Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Captain Stansbury, R. N., 1914, pp. 5-6.
