GEORGE MEREDITH (1828-1909)

Sir Arthur CONAN DOYLE. Two exercise books containing part of the autograph manuscript of a lecture on George Meredith, [1888], given at the Portsmouth Literary and Scientific Society, 20 November 1888 and at Upper Norwood, 1892, 24 pages (two in another hand), including notes, revisions and directions to editor, original marbled paper covers, spine of first book damaged, 4to, with part of original typescript by Adrian Conan Doyle with resumé of missing opening.
[Also:]
George MEREDITH. Seven autograph letters signed to Conan Doyle, 1888-1909, three with traces of mount: he thanks him for The White Company ('They have carried me along with them at a gallop'), and discusses a point in Sir Nigel ('As you present him now, he goes off smudged. I felt a disappointment'), he refers to the Edalji case and commends Conan Doyle for his service in the Boer War and the subsequent book 'most luminous' 22 pages, 8vo.

Autograph resumé by Conan Doyle of lectures, including George Meredith as a novelist and 'Facts about Fiction', 1 page, 8vo.

George Meredith was born in Portsmouth and educated at schools in Southsea. Thus Conan Doyle's lecture to the Portsmouth Literary and Scientific Society would have been attended by many who remembered Meredith's father and grandfather, a tailor and naval outfitter in the town.
