Lot Essay
J.T. Watts was born in Birmingham and, like Burne-Jones a generation earlier, attended King Edward's School. In 1874 he settled in Liverpool, where he was a much respected member of the local artistic community, although he exhibited widely and was a regular contributor to the Royal Academy.
Influenced by Ruskin and the Pre-Raphaelites, Watts specialised in forest and woodland subjects, occasionally with figures; a scene from As You Like It was sold in these Rooms on 10 March 1995, lot 148. The present example is typical, and epitomises Watts's ability to combine meticulous detail with a strong sense of atmosphere evoking one of the seasons or some specific time of day.
Twenty watercolours by J.T. Watts, perhaps the largest group ever put together, were included in Christie's sale of the Fuller Collection, 7 April 2000, lots 119-138, sold for prices ranged from £1,800 to £15,500.
