Lot Essay

The drawing may be a study for The Field of the Cloth of Gold: 'Twixt Calais and Guines (private collection), a large and ambitious work that Smythe exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1883. For an illustration and discussion of the picture's significance, see Victorian Landscape Watercolours, exh. Yale, Cleveland and Birmingham, 1992-3, cat. p. 166.
