Lot Essay

Cole Lesley, Coward's lifelong friend and secretary, writes that (in) 'the paintings of Jamaica - which are among his best ... he has caught the essential spirit and many moods of that lovely island. It is true to say that all those countless hours he spent at his easel were among the most carefree and happy of his life' (C. Lesley, The Life of Noel Coward, London, 1976, p. 241).
