In his discussions with Hitchens, T.G. Rosenthal once asked the artist if he saw the nude in terms of landscape. Hitchens replied, 'I expect so. Yes, it is the same ... much more complex really because in a landscape you can run your brush strokes upwards but of course a nude isn't a tree where it doesn't matter if it's going up. You have to organize a nude more subtly so that you've got to extend the bounds of its possibility' (A. Bowness, Ivon Hitchens, London, 1973, p. 14).
