THACKERAY, William Makepeace (1811-1863). Vanity Fair. A Novel without a Hero. London: Bradbury and Evans, January 1847-July 1848.
20 original parts in 19 monthly volumes, 8° (225 x 144mm). 40 engraved plates, wood-engraved illustrations, after the author. (Occasional light browning to plates, waterstain to one plate in part X, light spotting in parts XVI and XIX/XX, offsetting to title.) Uncut in original printed yellow wrappers (neatly repaired tears to covers of part IV slightly affecting border, the final part with minor repairs to front wrapper, back wrapper remargined and new spinestrip, a few other spinestrips renewed, other small areas of restoration, light soiling to extremities); 20th-century green morocco box. Provenance: purchased from Maggs through Willy Heimann, May 1967, for £850.
AN UNUSUALLY GOOD COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PARTS. The title on the wrappers reads 'Vanity Fair. Pen and Pencil Sketches of English Society.' This copy has the rustic lettering on p. 1, the 'Marquis of Steyne' woodcut on p. 336, and 'Mr. Pitt' for 'Sir Pitt' on p. 453. The advertisements differ from the copy described in van Duzer in having the first 4 leaves at the back of part I printed on pink paper not light green, and in having the 4 leaves at the end of part XVI printed on green paper rather than white. The advertisement slips for John Forster's Life of Oliver Goldsmith and Thackeray's Pendennnis are present in volumes XIV and XIX/XX respectively. Many parts retain the original tissue between the two plates. Van Duzer 230.
THACKERAY, W. The Newcomes. Memoirs of a Most Respectable Family edited by Arthur Pendennis. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1854-1855. 2 volumes, 8° (212 x 129mm). Etched frontispieces and additional titles, 44 plates, wood-engraved illustrations, by Richard Doyle. (Some plate margins a little browned, some offsetting to plates and text.) Contemporary half calf, marbled edges (front inner hinges of vol. I entirely split). FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM. Cf. Van Duzer 147. (21)
