A DOMARU NO YOROI [ARMOUR WITHOUT HINGES ON THE CUIRASS]
Edo Period (18th/19th Century)
The sixteen-plate hoshi bachi kabuto [helmet with standing rivets] in russet iron with unusually large hoshi [rivets] in the ancient style, a leather-covered peak surmounted with a kuwagata dai [horn stand] and modern kuwagata [horns], on each side of a gilded wood dragon maedate [fore crest], the neck guard of small rounded ko-manju form, a black lacquered iron mask with silvered teeth and a hair moustache and chin tuft, the fine large do [cuirass] of do-maru form wrapping round the body without hinges on the left side, a pair of gyoyo [cord protectors] to the front, chusode [medium shoulder guards] curved over the shoulder and widening towards the bottom russet iron tsutsu gote [sleeves], iron kawara haidate [thigh guards], black lacquered iron o-tate suneate [shin guards with an extended knee defence], and a pair of kutsu [fur boots], the armour overall constructed with black lacquered hon kozane [true lamellae] and laced with kozakura kawa odoshi [doe skin reserve dyed red with white cherry blossom] and extensively mounted with gilded copper in a design of peony flowers and leaves, the mon [crest] not identified, together with gusoku bitsu [armour box]
