2o (540 x 345 mm). Lithographed half-title and title and 100 lithographed plates after Rugendas, ALL WITH FINE CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLORING and heightened with gum arabic (small chip on one plate margin, a few plates with minor marginal fingersoiling or spots, first plate in laast part with minor adhesion on gum arabic). (Some minor spotting to some text leaves.) Contemporary red half morocco gilt (a few repairs near spine ends).
A VERY FINE COPY OF ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DESCRIPTIONS OF BRAZIL IN THE RARE COLORED STATE.
The work is divided into four parts: Paysages, 30 plates; Portraits et Costumes, 20 plates; Moeurs et usages des Indiens, 30 plates (5 plates misnumbered); and Moeurs et usages des Nègres, 20 plates. Besides their artistic and decorative merit, the plates have a "genuine documentary value, which are of utmost importance for the study fo Brazilian life at the beginning of the 19th century" (Borba de Moraes).
Although colored copies are not recored by bibliographers (see below) a copy of the prospectus in the Wurttembergische Landesbibliothek offers subscribers the option of having their plates colored at one franc per leaf. The plates were issued on papier de Chine appliqué or ordinary paper (as here), and colored copies have appeared on both issues, though the colored copies on ordinary paper seem to be the rarest and the most striking. Borba de Moraes II:221; Sabin 73935; Colas 2594; Lipperheide Md12; Palau 281204.
