Lot Essay

In the past, scholars have used documentary references to a sculptor named Bertos or Bertosi active in Rome as evidence that the Venetian sculptor Francesco Bertos worked in both centres. The present plaquette is therefore an important document as the inscription on the reverse clearly establishes the identity of an independent artist named Giuseppe Bertosi.
