A SWEDISH GILTWOOD MIRROR
Early 18th Century, probably by Burchard Precht
The rectangular bevelled plate in a moulded surround carved with pierced scrolling acanthus and small flowerheads, surmounted by an elaborately carved cresting of scrolling acanthus and sprays of flowers

Lot Essay

This elaborately sculpted mirror displays many of the characteristics associated with the work of Burchard Precht (1651-1738). Precht, who was born in Bremen and spent his apprenticeship at his brother's workshop in Hamburg moved to Stockholm around 1674. He began work at Drottingholm Palace in the same year and was appointed court-sculptor in 1682.
