Dodgson saw the American child actress Lizzie Coote (1862-1886) in a pantomime called 'Hop-o'-my-thumb!' on 6 January 1874, and remarked in his diary that she was 'a very clever little American girl', noting a few days later that she is said to be overworked and lies in bed all day, living on port wine and oysters; he saw her regularly at pantomimes in the 1870s, and sent her Alice and Through the Looking Glass on 18 March 1875.
