HOGARTH, William (1697-1764) -- GEORGE II (1683-1760), King of England. Letters patent, Westminster, 6 June 1757, appointing Hogart Sergeant Painter to the King, at a salary of ten pounds, the previous appointment of John Thornhill to the same office being revoked, in English on vellum, 570 x 725mm, printed initial letter portrait and borders, contemporary endorsements (light staining, a section excised from lower margin, lacking seal).
Hogart is appointed 'Our Sergeant Painter and Sergeant Painter of all our Works wheresoever as well in any wise belonging to Our Royal Palaces and Houses as to Our Great Wardrobe to be Painted Gilded or Imbellished and also Appertaining or belonging to Our Office of the Revels and to Our Stables and to Our Navys and Ships Barges and Close Barges Coaches Chariots Caroches Litters Waggons and Close Carrs Tents and Pavilions Heralds Coats Trumpet Banners and also in anything belonging to the Solemnization of Burials or Funerals'.
