MARILYN MONROE AND JOHN F. KENNEDY NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN 8MM COLOR FILM FOOTAGE
1962
One reel of never-before-seen 8-millimeter color film footage depicting many of the guests and entertainers who were in attendance at President Kennedy's Madison Square Garden birthday celebration on May 19, 1962, including Marilyn Monroe who sang her legendary rendition of 'Happy Birthday.' Lasting approximately seven minutes, this footage was shot in color (but without sound) by one of Ella Fitzgerald's band members who captured MM at a different angle from the black and white newsreel footage that is now so well-known. The top of MM's radiant blonde, bouffanted head is first glimpsed and then she is seen taking quick little baby steps up to the poduim to start singing. Unfortunately, she was only shot for a few seconds, but she looks splendid in full color with her platinum hair, white fur coat and nude-colored shimmery dress (which sold on October 27, 1999 here at Christie's New York for an astounding $1,267,500). JFK is also seen in this footage for a number of minutes, walking around and greeting people, as are Robert F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Jack Benny, Peter Lawford, the Jerome Robbins Ballet troupe, Harry Belafonte, Henry Fonda and Maria Callas among others who were part of this now-historic evening.
TECHNIAL ASPECTS OF FILM
This footage was shot directly from a small, hand-held camera in 1962 and no other print exists. It was taken to a professional film laboratory in Burbank, California where it was supervised as it was being properly cleaned and transfered to a contemporary plastic reel (instead of its original metal one). One DVD and one VHS videocassette were made, both of which are included.
Provenance
This film originally comes from the man who shot it and his 'letter of provenance' is included. It reads in part "I...do hereby certify that the 8mm movie of the Kennedy Birthday Party was taken by me in May, 1962. I was a musician in Ella Fitzgerald's band, as the program states."
