Lot Essay

The West End of the Town, which is set in St. James's Park, was engraved by Robert Pollard and an uncoloured aquatint of this scene was included in the Gardner sale, Sotheby's, London, 12 November 1923. There is no record of an aquatint of its companion picture and neither were included in the Pollard sale of 1810. It has been suggested that the pictures were engraved but not published, because of the collapse of the print market and they were being held in the hope that the market would improve.
