Lot Essay
Joshua Shaw, who was born in Billingborough, Lincolnshire, was first apprenticed to a sign painter, later setting up for himself in Manchester. By 1802 he is recorded in London but by 1805 he had moved to Bath, where he remained until 1811. He later returned to London but then emigrated to America in 1817 where he remained until his death.
A much smaller view of Dinting Vale by Shaw (12 x 15 in.), to which the present view can be compared, is reproduced by Colonel Grant (Old English Landscape Painters, vol. VI, Leigh-on-sea, 1960 p. 464, no. 490). Shaw exhibited views of Derbyshire both at the Royal Academy, 1802-10, and at the British Institution, 1811-14.
