The peghead inlayed with pearl Gibson and Gibson/CUSTOM/SHOP, stamped on the reverse 6 9830, semi-solid mahogany body, laminated maple top, bound rosewood fingerboard, two Humbucking pickups, length of back 15¾ in. (40.1 cm.); and original case with adhesive tape label inscribed by Lee Dickson Gibson 336!/6-9830

This guitar was sent to Eric Clapton by Gibson who sought his opinion on it. (2)

Lot Essay

LD: Gibson sent this to Eric because of his association with the ES-335. They wanted his opinion on it...It's a bit of a hybrid... It's not a bad sounding guitar...I think it was an experiment..


Michael McGuire of Gibson Custom confirmed that the ES-336 was in production for approximately five years in the mid-1990s. In 1998 a design change was made to the body, and the model name was changed to CS-336.
