1969 ASTON MARTIN DB6 Mk I VOLANTE

The new Aston Martin DB6 model was introduced at the 1965 London Motor Show as a distinctively restyled development of the successful DB4 and DB5 model ranges. The flat transom Kamm-tail topped by its integral spoiler attracted much comment, and although the new bodyshell was only 17lb heavier than its predecessor the DB6 gives the impression of being a far more substantial, deep-chested motor car. It certainly succeeded in offering increased leg and head room in both the front and rear seats. Quarter lights, last seen on an Aston Martin in the DB 2/4s, reappeared on their DB6.
The DB6s were powered by the successful 4-litre, 6 cylinder, twin-cam engine already proven in the racing DBR2 and production DB5 series, while Selectaride damper control was now standard equipment. As further departures from tradition, a 'Power-lok' limited-slip differential, chrome-plated or painted wheels, whitewall tyres and two or three-eared hub nuts all became options within the standard price which in 1965 was £4,998.
The Convertible Volante was also introduced at the 1965 London Motor Show, the first batch of 37 cars being built on the last of the DB5 chassis frames with an 8ft. 2 inch wheelbase. The grown up DB6 Mark 1 Volante then made its debut at the 1966 London Motor Show, its specification matching that of the DB6 saloon save for the power-operated hood and the all-up weight of 3,223 lbs. - 1,466.5kg - which was slightly less than that of the saloon.
This Volante DB6 is offered today in the same configuration in which it was supplied new, and is thought to be the only car so completed with black paintwork, black upholstery and black hood. A copy of the Aston Martin Works records, confirm this together with the fact that it was from new fitted with Vantage engine, manual ZF transmission and power-assisted steering, as such the most desirable specification. H.R. Owen supplied the car and Aston Martin guaranteed it from 10th April 1969.
By the early 1990s the car resided in France, where it was the subject of considerable expenditure, work being completed by Garage Vaillant and Prestige Auto, with parts supplied by Aston Service Dorset. Copies of bills for this work are on file, together with a 'Mark 2 and Volante' Instruction manual.
Only 29 Mark 1 Vantage Volantes were built, making this an exceedingly rare derivative, worthy of close inspection.
