Lot Essay

Embellished with precious feathered kingwood veneers, these unusual cabinets-on-stand relate to a drawing for a marquetry Schreibschrank, which was probably executed in Austria around 1725 (H. Kreisel, G. Himmelheber, Die Kunst des Deutschen Möbels, Munich, 1970, vol. II, fig 384). In form and construction, they relate to a number of cabinets and bureaux decorated in Boulle technique, which were executed in Vienna in the early 18th Century. These include a bureau in the Schlossmuseum in Linz, which, interestingly, also has the unusual feature of six legs (ibid., fig. 396), and a games table in the collection of the princes of Salm-Salm at Schloss Anholt, which is illustrated in A. Vliegenthart, Boulle Möbel des Fürsten Salm, Emmerich, 1995, pp. 16-17, figs. 11-12.
