Lot Essay

Also known as Bacchante à l'Amour, the present work was modelled by Gérôme in 1892. The subject of a putto climbing up a thyrsus held by a bacchante relates closely to the artist's 1868 painting Une Bacchante. The work was cast in bronze by Siot and, according to Ackerman, was probably edited in three sizes, the present cast presumably being an example of the middle size.
