Leader submitted a large view of Ben Vorlic, now in Rochdale Art Gallery, to the Royal Academy in 1858, which was accepted but not hung 'for want of room'. A comparable small view, also dated 1858, was recently offered at The Maas Gallery, exh. cat. 2002, no. 3. The pictures are early works by the artist, executed in the Pre-Raphaelite technique of painting on a white ground. The previous year the artist had changed his surname from Williams to Leader in order to distinguish himself from other members of that extensive artistic family.
