Lot Essay

The present work compares to Whitby Harbour by Moonlight (no. 42 in Atkinson Grimshaw, A. Robertson, 1979), which Robertson tentatively identifies as the first of Grimshaw's night subjects.

The artist painted many views of the Yorkshire fishing town of Whitby. The famous church of St Hilda, which abuts the ancient abbey, can be seen in the far right distance presiding over the town.

We are grateful to Alex Robertson for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
